Where Do My Piggies Live ?

My piggies live in my lounge all year round. All the pigs share a home-made pen and get along wonderfully in it !

It measures approx 4.5 foot x 3.5 foot. It has a large removable window at the front made from plexi-glass and a little wooden front door on hinges which I can open so they run in and out at their leisure. It is on wheels so I can wheel it in and out to hoover behind it. It is made from laminated chipboard which you can get from all the usual DIY stores, so it is very easy to wipe over. The floor is lined with linoleum which is waterproof and very easy to wash down and sterilise with no risk of soiling/soaking into any housing materials. This can also be regularly replaced if required. For some more pics - eg during clean out time and to see our bedding choices etc check out the housekeeping page. I very much like my pen, it is big and open so providing plenty of ventilation and air flow, yet solid sided to prevent draughts etc. They seem very happy in there and very secure - plus no cage bars to nibble ! Home Sweet Home !

An integral part of their housing arrangements includes a selection of cardboard 'Chubes' to run through [the orange things !], cardboard loo-roll innards to nibble on, their piggy carrier which I leave in the lounge for floor-time so they can play in it, log tunnels [refer to Entertainment page] and a cavy cozy which was lovingly made for us by the very lovely Treen - see how Trixie loves it [follow this link for more Cavy Cosy pics]!

It's the little things that make a difference !

In the past we have also used the 'cubes' design [refer to Useful Links Page for more info] for temporary cages when Allyson and Felicity first arrived, when Billy first arrived, also Poppy and Snowballs. They make ideal quarantine or hospital cages as they can be quickly put together, dismantled and sterilised. They are a very handy thing to have around ! However, for full time living I prefer my pen - all a matter of what makes you and most importantly, your pigs happy !

Cube-tastic !

Of course another very important part of my piggies living arrangements is their outside run - this gives them enormous pleasure, fresh air and fresh grass [see how we made our outside run and pics of the pigs enjoying the great outdoors]! The second pic is when Mouse was a baby, she was living in, I think it was an old kitchen cupboard frame or something ! It worked very well for a short time whilst she was teeny but Squirt soon came to live with us and they had their very own home-made pen made for them which was the proto-type for my pigs current pen ! The original was longer and thinner with a smaller window and a ramp going down - but sorry this is about the only pic I have of it with a baby Mouse and Squirt inside !

Awww how times have changed !
