Mop

My lovely little Moppie passed away on Thursday 23rd January 2003 - she is very much missed. She passed away peacefully in her sleep which I am very thankful for, she hadn't been ill - she reached the grand old age of nearly 6 and a half, night night Moppie.... thanks for being such a lovely hairy pig.

Mop was born approximately at the end of September 1996. She was 6 years old in 2002. She was a sheltie guinea pig. Mop arrived with her sister Tiger . They were so shy and so pretty !

Mop's favourite hiding place was under my settee where she snoozed for half an hour at a time instead of running around with the other piggies, this seemed to make her happy though.

Mop was my 'purriest' piggy. As soon as I picked her up she started purring, she especially liked it when she was sitting in my lap in the evening and was facing me. I put a hand over each side of her belly and gently massaged her in a clockwise direction. She would purr for half an hour at a time. She wasn't always like that, she didn't like being handled at all when she was younger but she eventually settled, she became a much purrier piggy after I decided to always keep her hair short & layered, I don't know why. It was so rewarding now to see how happy and relaxed she became. It was through Mop that I first established contact with Peter Gurney after I consulted him about the tendency of Mop to suffer sores around her mouth - eventually Trixie came to live with us from Peter. Mop also had one of the 'horny' growths on one of her front paws [that looks a bit like a long overgrown thick toenail if not kept clipped back] like Splattie has.

When I first bought Mop (and her sister Tiger) home from the pet shop they both had mites and were both very timid. I don't think they had been handled a lot before. If I didn't cut her hair regulary it would get very long, we both preferred it a little shorter as it gathered hay and could be prone to becoming damp and knotty underneath her bottom so I used to cut it every few weeks or as and when required. When I used to trim their hair they both used to squeak and struggle so I went by the rule of 'little and often' and I found the easiest way of cutting the hair around her bottom was to trim it when it was wet after she had had a shampoo. She normally became more relaxed and wet hair is a lot easier to cut.
